Supermoon at the Salt Flats

It's not every day you get to see a moon this spectacular.  I wasn't about to pass up the chance.

Making the long drive from Orem to the Bonneville Salt Flats with a couple of friends, we took a little walk around, snapped some shots of the surrounding beauty, and then managed to be surprised and enchanted by the sudden appearance of a huge, dark moon.

We were lucky, truthfully.  We only had about a five-minute window in which to capture the moon at all.  We saw it just as it was cresting the horizon line, and right before it went behind the cloud cover that had been looming all day.  And of course, photos couldn't actually capture the sheer size and scope of it -- but I hope I managed to capture a little of the beauty.

Apsens in the Snow

So, what to do on a snowy Saturday afternoon in February?  Why, go take photos, of course!

I've taken these aspens before, particularly in autumn, but I liked them in the snow.  I kind of wish I'd had a bit of sunlight to play with, but the cloudy day made for a nice even lighting.

Oahu Waves

Just got back from a marvelous trip to the beautiful Hawai'ian island of Oahu.  I spent an enjoyable afternoon just capturing the amazing blue waters and crashing waves of the North Shore beaches.  It's amazing how blue this water really is.  No Photoshop required.  ;-)

Grand Canyon

Few sights are as inspiring of true awe as the Grand Canyon.  There is an undeniable power to it.

I only got one evening with this beautiful place, but I wasn't about to pass up the chance to photograph it!

This was taken from Mather Point.

Autumn Magic

Autumn is really my favorite time of year.  Cool breezes, crisp air...and of course the amazing colors!  It's always struck me as such a shame that fall colors don't last very long.

This weekend, I took a lovely drive through Sundance and my camera and I had some fun.  I'd stop at random spots and stroll along looking for spots I hadn't yet seen.  I ended up finding a couple of good ones!  And I let Autumn take me to a place of enchantment.

Summer Sunsets

As a lover of color, it's awfully hard for me to resist a sunset.  We've been dealing with a lot of fires here in Utah this summer, due to the lack of snow all winter and the lack of rain all spring and summer.  The irony is that often, disasters like this tend to create the best and most dramatic kind of skies as the sun goes down.  I try to look at is as finding the beauty shining forth through any hardship.

Magical Moments

"Sometimes I do get to places just when God's ready to have somebody click the shutter."  ~Ansel Adams

Every once in a while, you get to experience a completely unexpected magical moment.  I was on my way home from California and happened to look in the rearview mirror -- only to see the most amazing fiery sky I have ever seen.  It blew me away so thoroughly that I instinctively slammed on the brakes.  I pulled over, grabbed my camera out of the trunk, and prayed to capture something that remotely resembled the scene before my eyes.

Of course, no photo can truly capture nature's pure majesty...but this is as close as I could come to the beauty of that moment.

Delicious Autumn!

Autumn is nearing its close.  But this is why I love being a photographer -- I can capture, keep, and enjoy autumn whenever I choose through images.

"Delicious autumn!  My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns."  -George Eliot

Fall Foliage

New England we ain't.  But Utah's aspens can yield some beautiful colors in the fall.  Autumn is my favorite time of year for photos.  Warm light, clear crisp air, and pleasant temperatures.  The colors make it just about perfect.  The biggest shame is that it goes so fast.

Happy World Photography Day!

Today is World Photography Day.  This is truly my kind of holiday!  A day to celebrate those who labor at the fine skills of photography in order to create beautiful and lasting memories to treasure forever.

I am posting two of my favorite waterfall shots.  I don't often do panoramics, but these have a special place in my heart -- not least because I adore waterfalls, and these are two of my all-time favorites.  The first is Fall Creek Falls, and the second is Middle North Falls in Silver Falls State Park.  Both are located in Oregon.

Calming

After a long Saturday of shooting BYU Summer DanceSport Challenge, and then a couple of days of steady processing and posting the resulting photos...I figured it was time for a little break.  A calming influence, if you will.  If I were to meditate and go to a calm environment in my mind, it might well be someplace like this.  The shots were takeni n Alaska, on one of the most peaceful and beautiful days of my life.

I definitely feel a little less stressed.  :-)
